Orange County Personal Injury Law Firm

Orange County, California boasts a healthy population of a little over three million people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division. With so many people living in the area, traffic often becomes harrowing. Car accidents and personal injuries sometimes happen as a result. If you are injured in an auto accident through the carelessness of others, you should take the time to find an experienced personal injury law firm in Orange County to help you seek compensation for your losses.

Personal injury from auto accidents

The California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) reported 3,401 people killed and 241,873 people injured as a result of 3,113 fatal collisions and 170,496 injury collisions for the year 2008. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, “Motorcycle fatalities continued to spiral upward from 518 in 2007 to 560 in 2008 (Data source: Fatality Analysis Reporting System, FARS). Motorcycle fatalities have increased 10 consecutive years and are at their highest level since 1990.”

Dangers of falling asleep at the wheel

The Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (University at Albany, State University of New York) discovered links between various factors and falling asleep at the wheel among long-distance truck drivers. Some of the factors leading to drivers’ falling asleep at the wheel are “greater daytime sleepiness; more arduous schedules, with more hours of work and fewer hours off-duty; older, more experienced drivers; shorter, poorer sleep on road; symptoms of sleep disorder; and greater tendency to night-time drowsy driving.”

While the study identified these factors as pertinent to truck drivers, it is easy to see that other non-commercial class drivers could face a similar fate under the same kinds of conditions. An Expert Panel on Driver Fatigue and Sleepiness, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), shared the fact that thousands of car accidents occur each year due to overly tired drivers. “Sleepiness causes auto crashes because it impairs performance and can ultimately lead to the inability to resist falling asleep at the wheel. . . . Critical aspects of driving impairment associated with sleepiness are reaction time, vigilance, attention, and information processing.”

If you are injured because another driver fell asleep at the wheel or was negligent in any way, you are fully entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit in Orange County. You deserve to receive compensation for any pain and suffering you endure because of another driver’s negligence.
